Though the band’s name may sound a little amusing, this group featuring Aves for vocals, Genard for lead guitars, Ace for bass and Karlo on drums have been giving their listeners last song syndrome with their music.

The four guys were brought together by their love for music. With their “simple pero rock” look, then (and maybe still now) thin frames (thus the name toothpick) and catchy vernacular lines, they gave a new dimension to bisaya music.

Their formative years was in high school, and them being high school boys, admit to have come from not-so-easy beginnings. They could hardly rehearse because sometimes, they don’t have P120 to pay the studio. When they had gigs, they had to borrow instruments from other bands. It doesn’t get better. When they changed drummers, the band’s performance was affected as well. They even experienced the humiliating “boos” of the crowd in one of their gigs.

But did that stop them from doing their music?

No. They believe that one day, when they pull their acts together, the crowd will be rocking to their music. And that day is today.

Having been added to MOR 91.9 Lokal nga Tukar bands, they started to get heard widely on air. They were brought to MOR gigs; the most life-changing of which was during the Charter Day and Bilib sa Kagay-anon launching. Even with their shorts, shirts and slippers, they rocked the Amphitheatre with their BisRock music.

Famous for their song “Bisyoso,” the Toothpick band has picked up their shattered pieces and put them altogether into one amazing performance during the Charter Day.

That was just the beginning.

When people started to show more concrete support and appreciation for their music, the band got more inspired in writing new songs.

Aves, the vocalist and also the composer, reveals that their songs mostly reflects real life stories. Who has not gone through a break-up? Who has not fallen in love? Who has not lost direction?

At one point of our lives, we all did, and their songs sing that melody you can pretty much relate to. For example the song “Ping-ping” which tells the story of his love named Ping-Ping, who broke his heart, who he got drunk for and did some stupid things because of the heartaches. There’s also the incoming song “Mabuang Ko” telling the story of a girl so sexy she can make men drool.

For the span of three months, the Toothpick band has come a long way. They are still thin, they still look simple, but their music can now be heard over the radio or whistled in tune by a random stranger you meet in Divisoria. And although most bands tend to get “hydrocephalus” when having too much fame, they promise to try their best to be that same old Toothpick five years from now.
